Installing 123Count on your site

step-by-step instructions
[ Quick link to the 123Count code ]

What do I need to do ?

For traffic analysis to start you need to add a few lines of HTML (the 123Count code) to all of your site's pages (at least to the main entrance page if you can not install on all pages)

How do I go about it ?

Ideally the code needs to be added directly inside the page's HTML. Depending on how you go about editing your web site, the exact way to do this will vary. You will find below step-by-step instructions for a few well known editors, as well as more general instructions if your own editor is not in the list.

If you do not know how to make changes to your own site, you'll need to ask your webmaster to do the installation: simply tell him that he will find all necessary instructions at http://www.123count.com/code.pl?user= and he should be able to do the installation for you in a few minutes.

Keep in mind that in almost every case, as long as your site can be edited, 123Count can be installed (even if you don't have direct access to your HTML). If you get stuck, contact us and we'll help you out.

Default install with a limited web site editor

If your editor has limited capabilities you probably can not edit your site's HTML or add JavaScript code to your web page (the default 123Count code contains JavaScript). The solution is to use a simplified version of the 123Count code which is much shorter, easier to install and contains no JavaScript.

The simplified version of the code will work fine on any site. Its only drawback is that it is not capable of recording screen size, screen color, referrer and keyword information, so these reports will remain empty in your stats. Everything else will work normally.

  1. click here to open a new window containing the simplified version of the 123Count code to be added to your site

  2. with your mouse, highlight the code

  3. press the Ctrl key and at the same time the C key (this will copy the highlighted text in memory)

  4. open your web page in your web site editor

  5. edit a paragraph of text

  6. put the cursor at the end of the text

  7. press the Ctrl key and at the same time the V key (this will paste the code at the cursor location)

  8. save your changes

  9. publish your changes

  10. go to your site : if you have setup your counter to be visible you'll see it appear on your web page (if not you can make the counter visible just for testing purposes in the 123Count Control Panel)

... That's it ! You can now test your installation

Not working ? Need additional assistance ? Read below for additional help, or to let us do the installation for you !

If you are still having difficulties, try installing the simplified version of the code available here. The simplified code does not contain any JavaScript and as such it is shorter and easier to install. It will work just like the full code except that it will not record any referrer or keywords information.

... or contact us with your user name, the URL of the page where you have attempted to paste your counter and a description of the problems you are encoutering. If you have FTP - File Transfer Protocol(*) - access, also send your FTP details (see next paragraph).

If necessary we can install the counter on your page for you. In order to do that we'll need FTP - File Transfer Protocol(*) - access to your site, which means your FTP address, your FTP user name and your FTP password (if you don't have them, ask your host). If you are interested, contact us with these three items (along with your 123Count user name) and we'll take care of everything for you.

(*) FTP means 'File Transfer Protocol'. It is a simple way to access your server to download and upload documents (typically to install the code we would FTP to your server, download your web page, open it with a text editor, add the 123Count code, save it and upload it back onto your server). FTP should be made available to you by the people hosting your site. If you don't have FTP access, please contact them and ask them for your FTP address, user name and password. Most hosts provide that service as part of their hosting package.
